Plak: Find and be found in South Africa

Plak is a Google Maps web application, it is 100% free of charge, and will always be 100% free of charge (For the cynics, there is no catch). Plak is an attempt to consolidate all aspects of tourism, travel and business in South Africa, and present information within a logical geographical context. If you decide to add your establishment/s to Plak, please remember to also add other places of interest, within the immediate area of your establishment/s, that could potentially attract visitors and/or business. e.g. A nearby beach, the local craft market, cinemas, theatres, restaurants, the local golf course, shopping centres, etc., etc., etc.

Please see the Plak online help. It should tell you all you need to know about using Plak.

Some of the unique features of Plak

1. There is no limit to the number of establishments you can add to Plak.
2. Plak allows up to 65 000 characters to describe each establishment.
3. Each establishment can have a link back to its own website.
4. Each establishment can have a single 'hot linked' image.
5. Plak provides driving directions, in both textual and graphical form, between any two points within the borders of South Africa.
6. Plak provides an easy search interface for locating provinces, cities, towns, suburbs and streets (In some cases will even locate street numbers) within the borders of South Africa.
7. Plak provides two different search interfaces for easily locating establishments.
8. The Plak database already contains all (I hope) police stations, and many medical facilities within the borders of South Africa.
9. Through its implementation of the Wikipedia Articles layer, Plak provides a huge amount of additional information to the potential tourist or traveller.

As part of an attempt to stimulate people into adding more places of interest to Plak, I have decided to run the following special offer. Add ten, or more, places of interest to Plak, and get one of your Plaks promoted for free! Promotion usually costs R 500.00 a year, and promoted Plaks are displayed randomly at the bottom of each page on the Plak website, like this: - Following is a list of criteria to quality for the special offer: - 1. NOT your hen house or garden shed! No one (apart from your hens maybe) has any interest in that. 3. Each place you add must be described using at least 200 words. 4. Each place you add must be placed accurately. i.e. Correct GPS coordinates. 5. Each place you add must be within the borders of South Africa. 6. • Using Plak Map for Facebook

Plak Map is a Facebook app, that allows anyone who owns, or is the admin of, at least one Facebook page, to put a Plak map on their Facebook pages. If you don’t know what a Facebook page is, please read this: – What is a Facebook Page? If you’d like to see a working example on Facebook, click this link. To install Plak Map, go to the Plak Map Community page, and click the “Install Plak Map on your FB Pages” button. After clicking the button, Facebook will prompt you to select a page. After selecting a Facebook page, click the “Add Page Tab” button. If Plak Map installed successfully, you should now find a Plak Map link (you can change the title of the link) on the page’s timeline. Click the Plak Map link, and you should see something like this: - Please note that ONLY page admins will be able to set the Plak ID of the Plak Map Facebook app. Now, enter the ID of your Plak, and click the “Set Plak ID” button. If you don’t know the ID of your Plak, it’s very easy to find. On your Plak’s more info page, look at [...] - 3 months ago

  • Plak: QR Codes

I’ve just finished implementing QR Codes on Plak, which should make it a lot simpler to get GPS coordinates into various mobile devices – Those that are able to read QR codes, of course. Each Plak’s more info page now includes four different QR Codes Clicking on the QR Code icons will open a popup window, and will display the QR Code you have chosen Reading the Google Maps QR Code should open the mobile version of Google Maps on your mobile device, and a pin should indicate the longitude and latitude. Google Maps should also resolve the actual physical address of the GPS coordinates. Reading the GEO QR Code should create a Point of Interest, that can be used by the GPS system, on your mobile device. The behaviour might vary, depending on the mobile device you are using. Reading the GEO vCard QR Code should create a geolocated contact on your mobile phone. You should then be able to navigate to that contact using the GPS system built into your mobile phone. I haven’t tested this one, but apparently it does work on Blackberry and Android mobile devices. Reading the Garmin POI QR Code should open a GarminPoint XML on your mobile [...] - 5 months ago

  • Plak wears black for Black Tuesday

Just for today I have changed the page colour of all Plak pages (except the home page) to black. This is in protest against the Protection of State Information Bill, on which the National Assembly will vote on, later today. - 6 months ago

  • Google maps for your website – Simple with Plak

During my travels around the Web, I have come across many websites that display maps, of some sort, for assisting potential clients in finding their establishments. To be perfectly honest, many of these maps are quite pathetic, ranging from hand drawn renderings, to Google maps that don’t work. I have also noticed that maps on many websites still hook into Google maps API ver. 2 – One of these days ver. 2 of the Google maps API will stop working. I assume that non-working Google maps on various websites, or Google maps that still tie into ver. 2 of the API, are the way they are because the owners of the websites (or the “webmasters” that manage the sites on behalf of the owners) aren’t aware of the fact that soon their ver. 2 API maps will stop working, or they don’t have the necessary skills, time, or money, to get their existing maps working or ported to ver. 3 of the Google maps API. Plak to the rescue – Ta-daaaaa! Over the weekend I worked on a very simple Plak interface that allows anyone to add a Google map (that includes driving directions from anywhere) to their website, and [...] - 6 months ago

  • Plak Tracker Beta

I’m in the process of rolling out a very simple tracker for Plak. The tracker will allow anyone who, has registered on the Plak site, to track multiple mobile devices, in real time, on the Plak home page. The tracker software in the mobile device will communicate current GPS information to the Plak server every 60 seconds, and the Plak server will store the latest 30 sets of GPS. Each Plak account can have an unlimited number of GPS devices, and the data stored by the Plak server will only be made available to those who have access to the Plak account. For example: - Peter registers on the Plak site Peter has a small business and wants to track his driver’s movements during the day Each one of Peter’s drivers has a mobile device with a built-in GPS Peter installs the Plak tracker software on each of the driver’s mobile devices The Plak server will store the last 30 sets of GPS coordinates for each of Peter’s drivers Peter can then log into Plak and see, in real time, where each of his drivers is, and the route they have followed over the last 30 minutes. No one else [...] - 9 months ago

  • Social Media button clean-up

With all of the Social Media buttons along the top of each moreinfo page, things were really starting to look ugly, and I wanted to add another one Yes! Another one! The Linked In share button is now also been included. So, while I was adding the Linked In share button, I thought it would be a good idea to tidy things up a bit. All of the different Social Media buttons have now been rolled into a single Social Media button. Clicking the single Social Media button will popup a div with all of the different Social Media buttons in it. When the Social Media div is being displayed, clicking the Social Media button again will close it. - 10 months ago

  • Roll-out of Google Maps API v3 is complete

On 02 June 2011 I blogged about various changes that had been implemented on the Plak website. The main change was the porting of Plak from Google Maps API v2 to Google Maps API v3. On 02 June, some of the Plak pages ported to use v3 were made public, and today that process has been completed. The main noticeable change on the Plak home page is that Street View information is no longer displayed in a little popup window. Street View information (if any exists) is shown on the main map. While every effort has been made to ensure that the changes are bug free, bugs may well exist. If you find any bugs, please report them so that they can get fixed. - 11 months ago
